How Your Septic System Works

All septic systems have a septic tank, which is buried underground near your home or place of business. Waste water from your toilet, shower, sinks, washing machines, and other appliances leave your house and get combined into a single pipe. This single pipe drains into the septic tank. Most current septic tanks have two compartments.

When the waste hits the septic tank, it begins to separate and the heaviest matter, called sludge, sinks to the bottom of the tank. Resting at the top of the tank are the fats, oils, and proteins that form a layer called scum. And in the middle you will find gray water, which is called the effluent. The effluent is discharged from the tank into the drain field and is degraded enough to be well-filtered by any good surrounding soil. Actually, the effluent can act as a fertilizer, which is why drain fields usually have healthy yards above them.

A septic tank holds three types of solids:

  • biodegradable "organic" solids, like feces
  • slowly biodegradable "organic" solids, like toilet paper
  • non-biodegradable solids, like plastic and kitty litter

The more slowly biodegradable organic solids and non-biodegradable solids in the septic tank, the faster it fills up and the more frequent septic pumping there will need to be and sometimes it may even be an emergency! Avoid emergency septic pumping by taking good care of your cesspool and by scheduling frequent pumpings.

Our Septic Services

Emergency Septic Pumping LineHamptons Septic Service is a full-service, waste-water management company. On our emergency services can cover a wide range of issues, including:

  • Wastewater Pumping
  • Septic Evaluations
  • Cesspool Pumping
  • Locating Services
  • Waste Line Replacements
  • Aeration & Acid Treatments
  • Onsite Wastewater Treatments
  • Systems Maintenance & Retrofitting

One of the main causes of drain line blockages is grease, sludge, sand, and debris clogging and solidifying in the waste line. Waste line clearing will fix this. Our waste line clearing methods penetrate and emulsifying grease and break up the sludge. This allows your lines to properly flush out and drain.

Another reason for clogged lines can be the penetration of plant and tree roots. In some cases, roto-rooter can clear these lines. However, we feel that the best remedy is replacing the waste line with a properly installed PVC line with effectively sealed connections. Roots are drawn to the water and oxygen that leak out of broken or poorly sealed lines, which causes the roots to grow towards the source. This can eventually damage the waste line. Our technicians use camera scoping to determine the cause of the blockage. We will discuss a proper course of treatment or repair with you.
